NVQs in Business and Administration

The NVQs in Business and Administration are designed to reflect the work of adminsitration staff across a wide range of industries and organisations.  The Level 2 NVQ is for those who are working with some autonomy and personal responsibility.  At Level 3, candidates will need to be working with a high degree of personal autonomy and personal responsibility.

Level 2 Certificate in Business and Administration

This qualification provides evidence of competence in a supporting role in an office environment.  Optional units provide the opportunity to show understanding and skills in a variety of areas including finance, IT and events.

To achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Business and Administration, candidates must complete a minimum of 21 credits, of which nine must be completed from the four mandatory units:

  • Managing your own performance
  • Improving your performance
  • Working in a business environment
  • Communicating in a business environment

A further 12 credits are chosen from a wide range of optional units which reflect the candidate’s work roles and responsibilities.

Level 3 Certificate in Business and Administration

This qualification is aimed at those who already have experience of office-based skills or who are preparing for a line management role.  Candidates can choose from a range of optional units which show their ability to negotiate, supervise, manage and contribute to the running of an office.

To achieve a Level 3 Certificate, candidates must complete a minimum of 40 credits, 13 of which to be completed from the four mandatory units:

  • Managing your own performance
  • Improving your performance
  • Working in a business environment
  • Communicating in a business environment

A further 27 credits are chosen from a variety of optional units which reflect the candidate’s role in developing, implementing and maintaining administrative services.

Entry Requirements

These qualfications are available to anyone who is capable of reaching the required standard.  It is essential that all candidates recruited have both the ability and the commitment to achieve all the outcomes of the relevant NVQ.

Duration

This largely depends on the ability of the individual candidate and the requirements of the employer.  It is likely that a NVQ Level 2 candidate will take between nine months and one year to complete, and the Level 3 candidate between 12 and 18 months to complete.

Delivery and Development of Learning

A nominated workplace assessor will guide and support the candidate in the development of essential skills and the knowledge required for each of the mandatory and optional units.  These are discussed and agreed between the candidate and the employer at the start of the programme, following an initial assessment to identify the candidate’s existing competence and knowledge.

Assessment

Assessment takes place in the candidate’s workplace where a qualified assessor will observe the candidate to ensure they meet all of the NVQ assessment requirements.

NVQs in Customer Service

We offer both the Level 2 Certificate in Customer Service and the Level 3 Certificate, dependent on the role of the individual employee.

Level 2 Certificate in Customer Service

The NVQ Level 2 certificate in Customer Service is primarily aimed at candidates who are employed in a service role . This qualification recognises that employment in this sector involves a diverse range of  tasks and activities  which develop and change as the role requires.  This qualification is suitable for candidates who have particular customer service and administrative duties, and who work in a customer service environment.

To achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Customer Service, candidates must complete a minimum of 28 credits, of which eight must be completed from the folowing two mandatory units:

  • Communicate using customer service language, and
  • Follow the fules to deliver customer service.

A further 20 credits are chosen from a range of optional units under the themes of:

  • Impression and Image
  • Delivery
  • Handling Problems
  • Development and Improvements 

Level 3 Certificate in Customer Service

The level 3 Certificate in Customer Service is aimed at candidates who will be delivering and managing service and who will be accountable in their area of practice.  Candidates will be working without direct supervision, for example in a commercial customer service environment.  This qualification is suitable for those who:

  • can influence what happens at work
  • are able to use an organisation’s rules and systems flexibly to deliver good service
  • are able to question the way things are done and suggest improvements

To achieve a Level 3 Certificate in Customer Service, candidates must complete a  minimum of 42 credits, of which 12 must be completed from the two mandatory units;

  • Demonstrate understanding of customer service
  • Demonstrate understanding of  the rules that impact on improvements in customer service.

Entry Requirements

These qualifications are available to anyone who is capable of reaching the required standard.  They have been developed free from any barriers that restrict access or progression, thereby promoting equal opportunities.   It is essential that all candidates recruited have both the ability and the commitment to achieve the outcomes of the relevant NVQ.

Duration

The length of time taken will depend largely on the ability of the individual candidate and the requirements of the employer.  It is likely that most Level 2 candidates will take between nine months and one year to complete, whilst the Level 3 candidates generally take between one year and 18 months to complete.

Delivery

As part of the NVQ programme, a nominated workplace assessor will guide and support the candidate in the development of essential skills and knowledge required for each of the mandatory and optional units.  This is discussed and agreed with both the candidate and the employer at the start of the programme, following identification of the candidate’s current competence and knowledge.

Assessment

These qualifications are competence based.  Assessment takes place in the candidate’s workplace where a qualified assessor will observe the candidate and assess their suitability to meet the NVQ requirements.

Apprenticeship in Team Leading

This is a work-based qualification suitable for those who undertake management-related activities.  The aim of this qualification is to recognise the skills and competences of candidates in the workplace, and provide individuals with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed for a career in management and team leading.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week ; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.

To achieve the full award, candidates must complete four mandatory units and two optional units.  The mandatory units include:

Advanced Apprenticeship in Management

This Apprenticeship is a work-based learning qualification and is suitable for those who undertake management-related activities.  The aim of this qualification is to provide individuals with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed for a career in management.   • A skills element resulting in an English, Maths and ICT skills certificate.

A minimum of twelve months

Touch Typing

This course is intended for those who wish to laern or improve their touch-typing skills using e-learnming resources, culminating in an official accredited touch-typing qualification.

Course Duration

This course will commence early October, exact start date to be confirmed.  Ten hours over two weeks – 10am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-4pm.

Content

Ten comprehensive self-paced sessions alternating between speed practice and accuracy lessons to improve overall keyboard skills, enabling participants who are complete beginners to gain a speed of 20wpm, with an accuracy of 90%; experienced participants can use the sessions to vastly improve their existing skills. Apprenticeship for IT Users – Level 2

This apprenticeship develops the knowledge and skills of those working with IT systems and software. The candidate will become competent in the use of the particular systems and software required in their job role, develop skills to enhance their personal and team effectiveness through the use of IT and help them gain an insight into the wider use of IT across their organisation. Candidates will be allocated an assessor who will visit in the workplace to plan progress and set tasks to complete, and they will need to attend College one full day a week.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.

Entry Requirements

Candidates will need to be over 16 years of age and working  in a role which requires use of IT systems such as sales and marketing or in office administration.

Apprenticeship in Customer Service

Apprenticeships are training programmes designed for young people who have left full time education.  This qualification leads to a Legel 2 NVQ plus Functional Skills.  Candidates for this course must be employed with an appropriate vocational area and will be required to attend College on 12 days during this one year course.  Employers with multiple staff will be offered training on site.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week including their time in College; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements although three GCSEs or equivalent at grade C or above are desirable.  Applicants must be employed  in a customer-facing role (this includes telephone communication roles) .

Duration

Up to one year, depending on ability. Employed in a customer facing role.  Students will be required to attend College for 12 days; employers with multipe staff will be offered training on-site. All students receive tutorial guidance and are set personal targets.

Content

Consisting of mandatory and optional units, the course covers:

  • Handling problems
  • Effective communication with customers.

CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement in the Care sector

This qualification is for those who assess both occupational competence and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in the Care sector.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, although candidates must have professional competence and an up to date working knowledge and experience in the standards being assessed.  They should also have held a post for aminimum of one year and have performed the activities being assessed within the last two years.  Candidates should also have a level 3 qualification appropriate to the standards they are assessing against

Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools – NVQ Level 2 City & Guilds 7329

This NVQ is designed to meet the national standards for teaching assistants.  It is a work-based learning qualification for those who work with teachers in the classroom, supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist schools.  Please note, City & Guilds are in the process of updating this programme so the content below may be subject to change.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be working in learning support as a primary, secondary or specialist school for at least two or three hours a week.  This course is ideally suited to those who work in a voluntary capacity or who are new to the role of teaching assistant.  A good standard of English is required.

Duration

30 weeks, part time day, three hours a week.  Course commences September 2012.

Content

The course comprises give mandatory and two optional units:

Compulsory units:

  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Support children’s development
  • Help to keep children safe
  • Contribute to positive relationships
  • Provide effective support for your colleagues.

Examples of optional units:

  • Support literacy and numeracy activities

Assessment

Each student is asked to complete a number of tasks based on their work in schools.  These tasks will then build into a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of the course.  There are no formal examinations.

Progression

Successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate could lead to progression onto Level 3 and/or employment as a Teaching Assistant in a school.

Training, Assessment and Quality Assurance (TAQA) Qualification for Assessors – City & Guilds Level 3

The assessment and quality assurance qualification will form part of an integrated suite of TAQA qualifications for training and quality assurance practitions.  This work-based learning course is for people working in the hairdressing, beauty therapy or sport and leisure industries and the units are designed as a flexible route into assessment and will give you and your organisation the opportunity to develop and inprove pratitioner skills as well as achieving a profession qualification.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be qualified to level 3 or equivalent in vocational hairdressing, beauty therapy or sport and leisure with a minimum of three to five years’ experience in the industry.  Applicants must be able to work on their own initiative in order to collect and record evidence and must be able to work to a deadline.

Duration

Tten weeks, one evening a week (Mondays) from 6pm-8pm for input on the course content.  For the remaining duration of the course, you will need qualified assessors to support and monitor your progress for the remainder of the course work,.  The course is intended to run for no longer than one year. Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Diploma – Level 3 and Level 4

These courses are designed for employees who wish to improve their career prospects by gaining professinal qualifications.  The skills gained in the AAT account qualifications apply to a wide range of accounting and finance positions and are recognised in many countries around the world.

Entry Requirements

Diploma for Accounting Technicians level 3 – candidates should have successfully completed the AAT Accounting Certificate Level 2 or equivalent Level 2 accounting qualification, and be AAT registered.

Diploma for Accounting Technicians level 4 – candidates should have successfully completed the AAT Advanced Diploma or equivalent Level 3 accounting qualification, and be AAT registered.

CACHE Level 2 Apprenticeship – Certificate for the Children’s and Young People’s Workforce -16-18 years

This qualification is for candidates who wish to work in the Children and Young People’s Workforce and are under 18 years of age.  Candidates will be allocated an assessor who will visit in the workplace to plan and assess.  Attendance is necessary one day a week at College to take part in group activities and tasks.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week including their time in College; there is flexibility so please discuss individeual circumstances at interview.

Candidates will normally have at least one of the following: a pass on the CACHE Level 1 Childcare Award or 4 GCSEs at grade D or above. Additionally, they should be working in a suitable environment with childcare or working with young people .

Apprenticeships are designed for people who have left full-time education and are employed with the occupation or sector.  This apprenticeship leads to a range of qualifications relevant to business and administration.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week including their time in College; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no formal entry requirements regarding qualifications or experience gained, employers may wish to outline their own in line with their current recruitment practice.  It is essential, however, that all apprentices recruited have both the ability and the commitment to achieve all of the outcomes of the Business and Administration Apprenticeship.

Duration

Thre is no fixed duration for this course, the length of time taken depending on the ability of the individual apprentice and the employer requirements.  The minimum duration, however, will be six months.

Content

Competence Based Element: NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Business and Administration. There is a choice of over fifty units of competence and the appropriate units are agreed between the employer, the apprentice and Kingston Employer Services at Kingston College.  This ensures the apprenticeship delivers skills designed around the employer’s business needs.

Knowledge Based Element: Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Business and Administration. This focuses on the knowledge and understanding which underpin a wide range of work and the  interpersonal and technical skills needed by administrators.

Functional Skills: English at Level 2 and Maths at Level 2

Progression

Successful completion of the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship may lead onto a Foundation degree, specialist administration roles such as legal or educational administrator, or management of administration functions.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) – City & Guilds 7303

This is a practical course that equips you with a threshold licence to teach.  Students may choose from an eight or ten week course, both of which use a range of formats. This course is ideal for:

Manual Handling at Work

This course is aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities at work and introduces participants to the hazards of manual handling, the risks involved and controls available, and what to expect from a manual handling assessment.  Successful completion wil prepare employees to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of safer methods and tasks. This qualification is not intended to train employees to carry out manual handling assessments.

Duration

The course is three hours in total, and is usually run over a half day in conjunction with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) half day programme.

Content

  • The process oif manual handling in the workplace
  • Manual handling inuries and the activities that cause them
  • Manual handling assessment and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.

Candidates will sit a 20 question multiple choice test at the end of the3 session.  A certificate of attendance will be provided.

Institute of Credit Management (ICM) Diploma in Credit Management Level 3 and Level 5

This course is open to anyone who wishes to make a career in credit management.

Entry Requirements

No academic qualifications are required but students should be able to express themselves competently in written English, be reasonably numerate and have an interest in credit management.  Experience in the credit control function is useful

Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management

This course offers practical skills to new and aspiring managers, and is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements – this diploma is designed for new and aspiring managers or those with management experience who want to gain an accredited qualification.

Duration

The Diploma in First Line Management is a five day programme, held on a Thursday between 9.30am-5pm. Forthcoming start dates are: 16 February, 1 March, 15 March, 29 March and 12 April 2012.
