Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools – NVQ Level 2 City & Guilds 7329

This NVQ is designed to meet the national standards for teaching assistants.  It is a work-based learning qualification for those who work with teachers in the classroom, supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist schools.  Please note, City & Guilds are in the process of updating this programme so the content below may be subject to change.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be working in learning support as a primary, secondary or specialist school for at least two or three hours a week.  This course is ideally suited to those who work in a voluntary capacity or who are new to the role of teaching assistant.  A good standard of English is required.

Duration

30 weeks, part time day, three hours a week.  Course commences September 2012.

Content

The course comprises give mandatory and two optional units:

Compulsory units:

  • Provide support for learning activities
  • Support children’s development
  • Help to keep children safe
  • Contribute to positive relationships
  • Provide effective support for your colleagues.

Examples of optional units:

  • Support literacy and numeracy activities
  • Observe and report on pupil performance
  • Support children’s play and learning
  • Support a child with disabilities or special needs
  • Support the use of ICT for teaching and learning.

Assessment

Each student is asked to complete a number of tasks based on their work in schools.  These tasks will then build into a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of the course.  There are no formal examinations.

Progression

Successful completion of the Level 2 Certificate could lead to progression onto Level 3 and/or employment as a Teaching Assistant in a school.

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) – City & Guilds 7303

This is a practical course that equips you with a threshold licence to teach.  Students may choose from an eight or ten week course, both of which use a range of formats. This course is ideal for:

  • Those who would like an introduction to teaching or training in the Lifelong Learning Sector. 
  • Unqualified teachers already employed in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Technicians and support staff in further or adult education.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should be qualificed to Level 2 or above in Literacy – there will be an initial assessment prior to being offered a place on the course.

The next course commences Tuesday 17th April 2012 until Tuesday 10th July 2012 – Tuesday evenings - 6.00pm until 9.00pm.

The first session will include course induction and an initial written assessment. 

There will be induction on Thursday 15 December between 4pm-6pm. Enrolment will be on 10 January 2012 at 6.30pm. 

Content

Units covered include:

  • What is teaching and how we learn
  • Roles of a teacher/trainer
  • Lesson planning and assessing learning.

Assessment

Assessment is made by a total of six short assignments and a weekly reflective journal, plus one 30 minute microteaching session – peer, teacher and self assessed.

This NVQ is designed to meet the new national standards for teaching assistants.  It is a work-based qualification for those who work with teachers in the classro0m supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist schools.  Please note, City & Guilds are in the process of updating this programme, so the content shown below is subject to change.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should usually have approximately one year’s experience of working in learning support at a primary, secondary or specialist school.  They should also be working a minimum of one to two days a week in a school environment and have a good standard of English.

Duration

30 weeks, part time, day – three hours a week.  Course commences September 2012.

Content

The courses comprises six comulsory and four optional units.  The compulsory units are:

  • Help to keep children safe.
  • Support pupils’ learning activities
  • Promote positive behaviour
  • Develop and promote positive relationships
  • Support the development and effectiveness of work teams.
  • Reflect on and develop practice.

Examples of optional units are:

  • Observe and promote pupil performance and development
  • Support pupils with sensory and/or physical needs
  • Support literacy development
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with other practitioners.

Assessment

Progression

Specialist courses are offered by national organisation, institutes, universities and some LEAs for those wanting further training in learning support in such areas as dyslexia, British Sign Language, ADHD and other areas.  Foundation Degrees for Teaching Assistants wanting to progress to initial teacher training are also offered in local universitiies.
