Apprenticeship for IT Users – Level 2

This apprenticeship develops the knowledge and skills of those working with IT systems and software. The candidate will become competent in the use of the particular systems and software required in their job role, develop skills to enhance their personal and team effectiveness through the use of IT and help them gain an insight into the wider use of IT across their organisation. Candidates will be allocated an assessor who will visit in the workplace to plan progress and set tasks to complete, and they will need to attend College one full day a week.

Government guidelines state that apprentices should be employed for at least 30 hours a week; there is flexibility so please discuss individual circumstances at interview.

Entry Requirements

Candidates will need to be over 16 years of age and working  in a role which requires use of IT systems such as sales and marketing or in office administration. 

Content

Mandatory units include:

  • Improving productivity using IT
  • Understanding the potential of IT
  • Developing personal  and team effectiveness using IT

Optional units include:

  • Word processing software
  • Spreadsheet software
  • Presentation software
  • Desktop Publishing software
  • Website software
  • Database software

Duration

One year, part time.  Attendance at College once a week for the majority of the day – some independent study will also be expected.

Cisco Network Academy Program – Cisco IT Essentials (CompTIA A+)

This course covers the fundamentals of computer hardware and software as well as advanced concepts.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements.  However, some basic knowledge of computer components would be helpful.

Duration

34 weeks, three hours per week.

Content

Students who complete this course will be able to describe the internal components of a computer, asemble a computer system, install an operating system and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic software.  Students will also be able to connect to the internet and share resources in a network environment.  Topics included in this course are laptops and portable devices, wireless connectivity, security, safety and environmental issues and communication skills.

Cisco Network Academy Program – Fundamentals of Wireless LANs

This course teaches students to implement, install and troubleshoot wireless networks.

Entry Requirements,

Competent use of PCs and basic knowledge of computer network principles.  Previous study of Cisco related material, for example the Cisco CCNA Academy Program or ideally a current CCNA qualification would be most useful.

Duration

15 weeks, three hours per week.

Content

  • Design of logical wireless LAN architecture for mobile wireless users in compliance with IEEE802.11 standards
  • Theory of the most common factors that influence WLANs including EM spectrum, radio wave propagation, modulation techniques and frequency and channel usage in wireless technologies.
  • Installation of WLANs with Cisco devices and appropriate antennae that meet mobility and throughput specifications including the site survey and documentation.
  • Hardware status and software configuration of Cisco wireless products, including security using Wired Equivalency Privacy (WEP), Cisco LEAP and 802.1x protocols.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues using event logging, command-line utilities and diagnostic tools.

Progression

Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Wireless LANs course helps students prepare for the Cisco Wireless CCNA concentration examination 640-721. – Implementing Cisco Unified Wireless Networking Essentials (UWNE).
